For the Public

Information for the general public

We know the transfer of a baby can be a difficult and stressful time for families and carers. This page may help to answer some of the questions about your baby’s potential transfer. Please ask the staff caring for your baby on the neonatal unit, or the transport team when we arrive if you need any more information.

Why is my baby being transferred?

Certain areas of specialist care are only carried out in a few units. The transport team exist to stabilise and support your baby in a safe and efficient manner, to that centre of care. Once your baby no longer requires the level of care provided in the specialist units we will also transfer back to the local hospital where possible.

Who will be transferring my baby?

A team of specially trained, experienced neonatal transport staff will transfer your baby. Their role is to care for your baby and keep them safe during the journey. The team will introduce themselves to you when they arrive and answer any questions you may have. Your baby will travel in a transport incubator, similar to the ones you see in the unit. They will usually be moved in a specially adapted road or air ambulance.

Where can I find out more about where we are going?

There is information on all of the Neonatal Units in the Scottish Perinatal Network here: Neonatal Units – Scottish Perinatal Network

Can I travel with my child?

We always try to support one parent to travel with their baby, wherever it is safe to do so. However space in the ambulance, plane or helicopter can be limited and it may not always be possible to accommodate you. For new mothers, they must be fit for discharge from midwifery care as we are unable to provide medical care for mothers in transport. If a mother is not able to travel with us, we can usually take another family member. We are not able to have children travel with us.

What happens if I can’t (or choose not to) travel?

The hospital your baby is being moved from will arrange an in patient transfer where required for mums. If you are travelling in your own vehicle the team will provide you the hospital address and contact details. For safety reasons, please do not follow the ambulance, take your time and get to your destination safely.
