Cot location and perinatal transfer coordination

In-utero Coordination Service: 03333990210

Background

The ScotSTAR neonatal transport service has worked closely with the Scottish neonatal networks and Clevermed to develop systems for coordinating in and ex utero perinatal transfers including cot location.

This system is based on pathways followed by the ScotSTAR call coordinators along with information supplied by Scottish neonatal units via the Badger system and the daily 12.30 call.

These pathways can be found here:

Daily 12.30 call

Please keep the participant code secure to avoid fraudulent activity.

At 12.30 each day neonatal units across Scotland dial in for a short conference call to discuss cot availability.  The call is chaired by the duty transport consultant and all units are asked standard questions regarding the following:

  • Cot availability for outside admissions
  • Cot availability for internal admissions
  • Mothers requiring transferred out
  • Planned admissions
  • Planned repatriations
  • Planned transfers for surgery, investigations etc

Staff participating in the call should be prepared to give answers to the above queries promptly.  Discussions around specific transfers are generally encouraged to take place outwith the call to ensure that other participants are not unduly delayed from returning to the shop floor.

The chairing transport consultant completes the form below during the call, noting the answers given by each of the units.  The completed from is then shared with the Specialist Services Desk team who provide the In Utero Coordination Service, and with unit managers around the country who have requested inclusion in the distribution.

Infants 28 weeks and older are preferentially directed to the level 2 units first where they have availability, to maintain ITU capacity in the level 3 units of those <28 weeks.
