Transport Options

Air

Islay Airport is 15-20minutes from the hospital and is suitable for both the EC135 Helicopter and King air fixed wing.  There is a helipad adjacent to the hospital but no suitable path for the incubator.  The local rugby pitch is also used for helicopter landings, this would necessitate carrying the transport incubator over the grass however.

There are 2 ambulances on the island, both with Ferno clamps

Local Access

The maternity beds are on the ground floor on the left through the main entrance.

Jura

Islay is accessible from Jura by ferry, and there are no facilities on the island for safe transport of infants.  It has therefore been agreed that any deliveries at home with GPs in Jura will remain at the place of birth awaiting the transport team, who will travel there directly.

There are two possible landing sites on Jura, the first is adjacent to the Isle of Jura Hotel.  There have been some issues re ambulance access to this area that are being addressed.

The other possibility is a grass landing site that has been used in the past by Islander aircraft.  It is 4 miles from the GP surgery.

Some private houses have helipads that may be used as well.

Choice of landing site will depend on the location of the baby and up to date local information.

It should be noted that the ambulance in Jura cannot accommodate the transport incubator.
