Description:

  • A small community hospital serving the mid Argyll area.  There are 20-25 births a year, 25% at home.

Responsible Unit:

  • Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley who will arrange the destination for the baby

Staff:

  • There are 6 WTE midwives, most NLS trained and have attended the stabilization course.
  • Medical cover is from local GPs, further assistance is available from A&E ENPs.

Transport Options:

Lochgilphead is a long way by road.  When deciding re mode of transport the team should assess the clinical need and bear in mind rational use of air ambulance resources.

Air

  • There is a helipad at the hospital
  • In addition there is a helicopter landing site 5 minutes by ambulance from the hospital, on an area know as the green at the head of loch Fyne.

Road

  • 2.5 hours from Glasgow, poor roads.

Local Access:

  • Via A&E to the “Craignish ward” maternity unit on the ground floor.
