Description

  • A medium sized general hospital with a CMU covering a wide area and with a significant summer tourist population.

Staff

There are 3 midwives on duty by day, with an on call system overnight.  All midwives are NLS trained and most have attended the stabilization course.

Local GPs have opted out of maternity cover so there is no 24 hour medical cover, though help may be available from those covering A&E in emergencies.  Local anaesthetists also can cover.  There is a local community paediatrician, though he doesn’t provide on call cover.

Transport Options

Air

  • There is a helicopter landing site by the hospital, an ambulance is required to access the hospital.

Road

  • 2.5 hours from Glasgow, poor roads, very busy in the summer.

Local Access

  • The maternity unit is on the first floor and is easily accessible.  Go to first floor and follow signs for maternity, past ward A, theatre and Neilson unit.
