Description
Six bedded unit, 3 single rooms and a 3 bedded area.
All areas are large enough to accommodate full size bed, cot and transport incubator.
Staff and Training
Usually two trained staff on during day. One overnight with on call staff available to come in when needed.
Health care assistants also within team
Enter via accident and emergency access road. CMU building diagonally across from.
During office hours main door open – out with hours buzzer has to be pressed to gain entry.
Lift straight ahead to right hand side goes to first floor. Exiting lift unit is straight ahead with security door entry. (Security entry can be over –ridden in the event of emergency by lifting the glass panel at door entry sign and pressing button *alarm will sound to let people know this has been activated and security over-ridden).
Ambulance / other staff availability
Large unloading/loading area beside building main entry. Overhead canopy for shelter.
On call staff available if needed.
MAT AREASize
Six beds. Three good sized single rooms with a three bedded area for post-natal mums.
Power supply
A good supply of plug points throughout the whole unit.
Gas Supply
- Piped oxygen at all bed spaces.
- Resuscitaire have piped oxygen, use disconnected ambubag if resuscitating in air.
Equipment
- Resuscitaire – All built-in to wall on the three single room. To gain access simply pull handle and it will pull out to 90 degree angle .
- Syringe Pump – One braun syringe driver in good order.
- Incubator – None
- Monitoring – Free standing monitor – HR,BP, RR, SAO2
- Nellcor saturation monitor also.
- X-ray – Not readily available (can be done but involves bringing a portable machine in a van).
- Blood gas – Available in main hostpital, blood transported by porter
- Telemedicine link – Not available

Travel /mode of transport
Road
Approximately 30minutes from Ninewells by road. Motorway majority of journey. Two points of entry into Perth city dependent upon traffic.
Motorway to all entry roundabouts to town. Road system in town well signposted.
Air/ landing site
Airport nearby – requires short road journey with Dundee airport 30mins away. Hospital in built up area with no safe area for rotary wing to land
Normal referral unit
Ninewells Hospital Dundee
Referral calls are made directly to NICU at Ninewells with care being advised from Consultant/Registrar on for NICU. ** All emergency 2222 calls out of hours come to Ninewells paediatric reg. Who will then respond appropriately.
There is also a paediatrician within hospital for few hours in afternoon (weekdays).
Who arranges cot
Midwife caring for baby, or nurse manager if available.
Who dialogues with receiving consultant
Midwife taking care of baby or nurse manager if available.
Other issues/ recommendations
Door entry system to building requires either swipe card or staff to buzz you in, if busy may be time delay.
O negative blood is located in outlying building and has to brought by porters which again maybe time consuming.
Paediatrician cover week-days 2pm-6pm generally. Outwith these times all referrals/emergency calls come to Ninewells paediatrician.
