Referral Unit

Aberdeen Maternity Hospital

Description

Midwife led service with GP (with special interest in obstetrics) attached to a rural general hospital.

There are 3 consultant anaesthetist, 3 general surgeons and 3 physicians.

There is a 9-5 (with out of hours on call) theatre and A&E department.

Approx 300 women book each year with about 100 of those risk assessed to deliver in the obstetric unit. Most of them take this advice but increasingly they are deciding to stay in Shetland.

Method of Transport:

200miles by air ambulance and road ambulance transfer. The airport is at the very south of the islands with a 30-40 min ambulance journey to the maternity.

We do not transfer women in labour

The Birthing Unit

The unit has 5 in-patient beds and 2 labour rooms (1 with a birthing pool).

There is a resuscitation bay.

Staff and Training

The unit is staffed on an integrated basis. Each midwife has a clinical caseload and community clinic. They also staff the inpatient area.

There will be 1 midwife and 1 HCSW on duty in the unit with on-call staff available if needed from community or home.

All staff have undertaken the SMMDP neonatal stabilisation and transfer course (required this year).

Regularly neonatal rescus training takes place locally.

Equipment

  • 2 Hillrom rescusitaires in unit and 1 in theatre.
  • Datex ohmeda  monitor ( HR, BP, RR,SaO2, CO2 ) ventilator
  • blood gas capability from lab
  • radiography available.
