Description

Aboyne Hospital is attached to the Aboyne Community Hospital  which combines the GP Surgery, the Community Nursing Teams and several out patients’ clinics.  The birth rate is approximately 60-80 per annum. The Birthing Unit has been upgraded and is located on the ground floor with good access through double doors for the incubator. The birthing unit has a separate entrance.

Method of Transport

Road

  • On entering Aboyne the turn off to the hospital is located on the left hand side of the road.  The hospital and health centre are located next to the ambulance service depot.
  • Distance from Aberdeen approx 40 mins
  • Helicopter would land in the park near the hospital

The Birthing Unit

Within the birthing unit there is one delivery room, one birthing pool room and a large room set up for resuscitation.  There is piped oxygen, cylinder air supply. There is plenty of power points and good lighting. All staff carry mobiles with hands free facility.

Staff and Training

2 midwifes are on duty at deliveries. All staff are NRP trained. There is 12 staff in total. The staff work 9am till 5pm with an on call rota for out of hour deliveries. In emergencies they could call on nursing staff from the general side. The NHS 24 doctor would also be available.

Equipment

  • There is a Drager resuscitaire with neopuff attachment, blender.
  •  No monitoring or infusion pumps.
  • No facilities to do blood gas analysis or X-ray
  • Telemedicine link in NHS 24 department of hospital.

Drugs

  • Resuscitation drugs (adrenaline and naloxone)
  • Morphine and Benzyl penicillin available.
