Description

Large open plan ward area allowing four post natal beds. One cubicle is available but not used on a regular basis.
2010 deliveries were excess of 200.

Staff and Training

  • Midwifery staff currently 13.
  • The unit do operate an on-call regime for additional cover if needed.
  • Generally during daytime two midwives on duty. Night is covered with only one midwife therefore on-call utilised more during these hours.
  • One maternity care assistant also within team.

Location of Midwifery Unit/ access

Unit is located within the hospital building on first floor. Access to hospital is via a side double access door directly into access lift. Unit has door security access for entry and coded exit control. Access for incubators is satisfactory although a little confined in some corners (old building). Room size accommodates incubator with equipment and team.

Ambulance / other staff availability

  • Frontline ambulance for patient transfer.
  • Neonatal vehicle for neonatal journeys.
  • Ambulance parked at main side entry door with lift immediately to left on entering building.
  • Large area of car park to allow loading/unloading and turning.
  • Hospital on busy main road through town.

MAT AREA Size

  • Large open plan four bed area with cots beside. Lots of space, light and facilities for mothers and babies.
  • Generally side cubicle not utilised for mothers.
  • Large room for resuscitaire, transport team and any clinical interventions needed to be done.
  • Smaller cubicle near birthing pool can fit resuscitaire but not kit bags, incubator and team.

Power supply

Plug points numerous and well placed.

Gas Supply

All cylinders supply. In total unit normally stock 4 –5 size E. Outside buildings can contain up to 10 cylinders of each.

Road

Approximately 40mins from dundee
Generally dual carriageway and then country roads. Can be problematic in winter due to adverse weather conditions.

Air/ landing site

No nearby airfield (nearest Dundee). Rotary wing could be used as large clear areas for landing nearby.

Who arranges cot

Referring midwife caring for baby and mother contact Ninewells for advice and to alert transport team for transfer of baby.
Calls taken by either Consultant within the unit or senior staff for offering advice.
