Description
Caithness General Hospital is an 86 bedded hospital and provides a service to a population of 40,000 in an area of 3,000 square miles. The maternity unit is located on the 2nd floor and there is good access. There are approximately 250 deliveries per annum.
Method of Transport
Road
The road is very winding with some sharp bends. Follow the A99 north to Wick. In Wick keep on the A99 and take the first turn at the roundabout into Station Road continues straight into Bankhead road where the hospital is located.

The Maternity Unit
- It has a 6 bedded unit with 2 labour beds, a delivery room and theatre facilities.
- There is piped oxygen and air.
- There is a neonatal area with resuscitation facilities
- The room is warm but most of the power sockets are based along one wall. N.B. Require an extension lead for the incubator.
Staff and Training
- The Midwifery Team has 18 Midwifes, 2 Midwifery Assistants and 5 axillary staff.
- There are 2 obstetricians and 3 anaesthetists available to provide assistance.
- There is always one midwife allocated to be on for the unit during the day the rest covering the community. There are 2 midwives on call at night.
