Description

Unit size/ birth rate:Large unit with 5 single rooms within area. Each room large enough for bed with cot and incubator. Two birthing rooms as soon as you enter to the left – resuscitaire located between both.Birthing pool available.112 births within 2010

Staff and Training

12 Midwives. Usually two on duty daytime and one overnight. One HCA on at night occasionally. On call midwive overnight who may be contacted to attend delivery/referral of baby.

Location of Midwifery Unit/ access

Side entrance, walk up sloped area into main building. Turn left and take lift to first floor. On exit of lift turn right then right down sloped walkway into unit. Unit at all times is accessed by a key fob, no access number or other entry mechanism.

Ambulance / other staff availability

Ambulance should enter building at side entrance. Speed bumps through this area with overhead access bridge. Vehicle can easily fit through this but should be done at very low speed and caution.

All cylinders. Unit usually have two size E both oxygen and air.
Spare three cylinders within area.
If excess needed during day then porters have access to external stores of cylinders. During night hours cylinders maybe gained from minor injuries unit.

Who arranges cot

Referring midwife caring for baby and mother contact Ninewells for advice and to alert transport team for transfer of baby. Calls taken by either Consultant within the unit or senior staff for offering advice.
